Elias tells of his work that it is a result of six years of journeys to Iceland, during which he photographed people he met at bars, on the street or when he hitch hiked around the country. Portraits are mixed with stark contrasted images of landscapes and photographs of nightlife in the villages and cities around Iceland. Elias says he often deals with interpersonal relationships and the wish of belonging. He describes his images being vulnerable, poetic and sometimes violent and that he creates a world which asks questions about identity, presence and how you through photography can find your place in the world.
Theo Elias is a photographer and artist living and working between Stockholm and Gothenburg, Sweden. His photography is exhibited internationally and his debut book Smoke, published by La Fabrica, was the 2019 winner of Photo London & La Fabrica Dummy Award.
